"Beneath the stride of giants" 2004 wood from found furniture.
-Large installations
-Sculpture
-recycled materials
-Found object assemblages
-elements of play/humour and at the artist's own admission dumbness
I thought this lecture was fascinating I loved his playful and quirky side to his practice, not taking Himself too seriously.
He found joy in making work because he wanted to and because he could, not because he felt the need or had to explain his actions, reasons or intentions every 5 minutes. Which takes the joy out of making art as you always have the audience in mind rather that what you actually want to produce.
He believes that doing sculpture or installation, means the objects contained within the work act as if a dress-up or facade, allowing a theatrical twist. He believes we make ourselves and re-make ourselves based on or around the objects we surround ourselves with. Which is the reason why is he is such a passionate collector of stuff.
Fabricates a story and uptopian ideals around the objects he uses in his work, as they reflect who we are as people.
Our need to create a better world, but also our need to use humour as way to perservere with life.
I loved his work and this lecture was extremely fascianting, I really admired his practice and the intentions in his work.
I will be referencing Brian Griffiths in my own practice next year.
